THERE IS AMAZING news out of England today, where have confirmed, through DNA testing and other evidence, that recently-uncovered remains are indeed those of King Richard III.
What makes the story even more incredible is that the infamous Plantagenet was found buried under a modern-day parking lot.
It seems a fitting end for one of British history's most-notorious figures, though historians say Richard of Gloucester was at least in part the victim of negative propaganda by the Tudors who succeeded him, and of course the not-really-accurate portrayal of his life and reign in the Shakespearean play that bears his name. Regardless, his life was an absolutely fascinating one, and I strongly encourage anyone with interest in history (as I have) to read up on him.
I'm also astonished by the fact that the remains of Richard were found not by accident, as so many great historic discoveries are, but exactly where archaeologists hoped they would be. I recommend an excellent write-up in The Guardian to learn the whole story. It's worth your time!
Just goes to show that regardless of whether we are born into wealth and power or poverty and despair, we all end up in pretty much the same place at the end.
